IRC Section 45 Tax Credits ("Production Tax Credits" or "PTCs")
A qualifying project can generate PTCs that are recognized over 10 years in lockstep with electricity production. PTCs generated in 2023 and 2024 have a base value of approximately $28/MWh. PTCs may be attractive to tax credit buyers who wish to reduce their tax liability in multiple years.
IRC Section 48 Tax Credits ("Investment Tax Credits" or "ITCs")
A qualifying project can generate an ITC that has a base value equal to 30% of eligible project costs. For example, a solar project that costs $100 million to develop may generate an ITC worth approximately $30 million. The ITC is recognized over one year and may be attractive to tax credit buyers who wish to reduce their tax liability significantly in a single year.
